USA Continues Stellar Play

The youth movement of USA Soccer has really paid off as of late. That was no more evident than the Red, White, and Blue’s most recent victory, a 2-0 shutout of Guatemala. Two young superstars-in-training made the difference for coach Bob Bradley‘s national squad, Freddy Adu and Jozy Altidore.

Freddy Adu

Adu has finally cashed in on his incredible skill, netting his first goal in a USA jersey in the 69th minute. Although no assist was given, one should have gone to Altidore, who drew the penalty on Guatemala’s Yony Flores just outside the box, giving the US and Mr. Adu a free-kick. From there, Freddy knew exactly what to Adu, as he curled a shot over the wall and into the top-left corner of the net past a diving Ricardo Jerez to cap the scoring and sealing the victory for the US, 2-0.

Jozy Altidore

Even though he did not receive an assist on Adu’s goal, Altidore did receive one on Kenny Cooper’s spectacular sliding goal in the 54th minute. Surrounded by three defenders, Altidore remained calm and found a streaking Cooper heading for the net. With all the poise of a 10-year veteran, Altidore hooked a perfect ball right into the box, just beyond the defender and just in front of Jerez, allowing Cooper to slide behind the defender and deposit the ball five-hole on Jerez, to put the US up 1-0.

The 19-year-old duo has been the backbone of Bradley’s youth movement and both are starting to show why. For more on this game, go here.
