Philly, SoB Show Women’s NT Some Love

Removed from the fog of Beijing, the gold-medaling Women’s National Soccer Team walked out into the bright lights of Lincoln Financial Field last Saturday night to thunderous cheers.

Sitting behind the goal with a group from Sons of Ben we watched as the ladies in blue thrilled the faithful with a 2-0 defeat of Ireland in the first in a series of friendlies against the Irish.

The proud chants bellowing from Sons of Ben and the cheers from young female supporters in the crowd of more than 13,000 went a long way to prove soccer (of any gender) truly has a home in Philadelphia.
Beyond the fan support and the U.S. win, one particular highlight came when SoB faithful introduced Ireland’s goalkeeper, Emma Byrne, to the Philly sports version of Brotherly Love.

At three times during the second half the group rattled the Irish keeper with chants of her name, and at one point got her to look over her shoulder with the ball still at her feet.  It was all in fun… it’s not like she’s T.O. , but it goes to show that regardless of the stakes, it’s never easy to be the road team in Philadelphia.

Recent Update: Kixx in League of Their Own

News dropped yesterday that the Philadelphia Kixx, the indoor soccer franchise, will be participating in a new league this season. The Kixx, along with teams from Baltimore, Orlando, Rockford (Il.), and Monterrey (Mexico), will be a part of the new National Indoor Soccer League (NISL) and will start the season later this year.

The Spectrum will be the home for the Kixx for its final year of existance and rumor has it that the Kixx are in talks with Temple University to move the team to the Liacouras Center for the 2009-10 season.

Local Soccer Star

Check out Jan Hefler’s story on local Olympic soccer star Carli Lloyd. Lloyd is a native of Delran, N.J., a fellow midfielder, and a damn fine Gold medalist! Not to mention she scored the loan PK in overtime to get the win in the Gold medal game against Brazil.
